Vsp Insurance In Seattle

Having vision insurance is as important as having health insurance. An annual eye exam is essential to be sure that you are seeing correctly and your eyes are healthy. One very popular vision plan is Vision Service Plan (VSP). Our optometrist at Optometry Medical Group in Seattle, WA, accepts VSP.

What is VSP?

Currently, VSP is the largest vision insurance company in the United States. It is estimated that one in every five Americans is covered by this plan. If you are covered under VSP, it is important that you find out about your benefits early.

What Does VSP Cover?

Most VSP plans cover one eye exam each year and also cover eyeglasses. When choosing your eyeglasses, you won’t be able to select a frame from your eye doctor’s stock. Instead, VSP has a wide selection of frames available to you. If your plan covers contacts, you can use the benefit; however, you cannot get both eyeglasses and contact lenses during the same service period. Also, the contact lens exam is not covered under your VSP plan. Therefore, you would need to pay for the contact lens portion of the exam out of your pocket.

Member ID Cards

VSP does not require that you have an ID card. When you make an appointment with your eye doctor, they would need the Social Security number of the person who holds the insurance. The optometrist will use this number to verify your eligibility and to determine what your coverage includes. If the receptionist asks you for a member ID card, be sure to let them know that you have VSP, and they will understand that you won’t have a card. You can also check your eligibility and benefits on your own by logging on to the VSP website.

Medical Exams and Testing

If you need to see your optometrist for a medical reason, such as an eye infection, your VSP plan will not cover the exam. This would be considered a medical visit; therefore, it would be billed to your medical insurance. The same is true if you need to have any testing done on the day of your eye exam. VSP covers routine eye exams only.
